Eartha Kitt, who passed away on the 25th December 2008, aged 81 from Colon
Cancer, was once said to have visited Rishton.
The actress and singer, best known for her television role of cat woman in
the 1960's, was playing a gig in Blackburn, at the Cavendish2
(which later became the Mecca) around 1970 - 19712.
After she had finished her show, she visited friends on
Spring Street, where she is said to have stayed overnight. I am also told
that she actually stayed at the
Dunkenhalgh2.
She was sighted by a young Tracey Walsh and her mother, who lived near to
Shear Brook
Farm at
Meadowhead.
She had been sighted taking her daughter out for a horse ride, and the
canny girls waited for the couple to return, whereupon a photo opportunity
occurred with Earth Kitt.
Her biggest hits came in 1955 with "Under The Bridges Of Paris" which
reached number 7 in the UK Chart, but her best known song was the 1953 hit,
"Santa Baby".
