Born 21st November 1893, in Vellore, India.
Died 1964, aged 71.
Stanley was educated in Ireland, and qualified as a Doctor there in 1918.
During the 1st World War, he served in the Royal Navy, defending the home
waters, then after this spent 3 years in the Indian Medical Service, possibly
in Bombay.
About 1925 Stanley met Elizabeth Sidford Parr, and soon after married her
in Drogheda, County Louth, Ireland. The newly married couple moved to
Cornwall, and there had three children:-
- Maureen Mitchell born 1926, died approx 1976.
- Patrick Mitchell born 1927, now living in Scotland.
- Norah Mitchell born 1930, now living near Lancaster.
With 3 children in tow, it seems the Doctor was transferred to a small
town in East Lancashire, known as Rishton in 1934. Here they settle into
number 28 Harwood Road, pictured on this page, which was also the actual
practice for Dr Mitchell.
The live-in maid at Number 28 was Sara 'Sally' Cunliffe. A Rishton girl,
she was 26 years younger than Stanley, born on James Street in the town, in
1919.
Stanley left his family and his home about 1938, possibly under a black
cloud and Stanley and Elizabeth were divorced soon after.
Stanley then went off and joined the Royal Army Medical Corps a couple of
years later, in 1940, and left for London with Sara Cunliffe - the live-in
maid. Together Stanley and Sara had their own children:-
-
Michael Mitchell born 1944, Woolwich, London
-
Anthony Mitchell born 1946, Llandeilo, Carmarthenshire
-
Gwen Mitchell born 1948, Cwmtillery, Abertillery
-
Robert Mitchell born 1954, Pontypool
Stanley died in 1964, living in Cardiff. Sara Cunliffe remarried and had
four further children; she died in Cardiff in 1999.
Meanwhile, back in Rishton...
Elizabeth Mitchell never remarried, and she continued to live at 28
Harwood Road for many years afterwards, working as an insurance agent.
Stanley and Elizabeth's eldest child, Maureen Mitchell, went into the
nursing profession at an early age, following in her fathers footsteps, but
tragically died in a car accident in 1976 in Australia, where her remaining
family were still living in 2003.
Norah Mitchell, Stanley and Elizabeth's youngest child, married George P.
Michelmore, and lived for a time in Canterbury, where Elizabeth Mitchell died
in 1979.
